Quemar is an independent paperback and online press, founded by Katharine Margot Toohey in 2016. 'Quemar' means 'to burn' in Spanish. In that language, it has the connotation of something luminous, deliberate and constant. Quemar Press believes the necessity of the books it publishes is inextinguishable.

Quemar Press was founded in 2016 as a publishing house with a focus on publishing new work and also preserving works which are little known in a Modern Australian context.
With this emphasis on new and classic work, often by women, Quemar Press has published new, experimental novels and new poetry collections by award-winning author, Jennifer Maiden (including her entire Play With Knives Quintet), work by rare Surrealistic artist Vera Rudner, and new accessible Modern Australian English translations of work by the Medieval theorists Montaigne, Medieval Romances by the earliest female French poet, Marie de France, and the anonymous author of the feminist Medieval French Chantefable, Aucassin and Nicolette.
Quemar's paperback titles have included four new Australian novels, a revised edition of a classic Australian thriller, a new Australian poetry collection, a new collection of Selected Poems,  and the only study of the postwar surrealist work painted by an Australian/Jewish survivor of Nazi Germany. Our new electronic titles have included five Australian novels, two collections of Australian poetry, a photo-illustrated book of Montaigne's observations translated from Middle French into Modern English, a photo-illustrated Modern English translation of a rare text of a Medieval French Chantefable, and two Modern English translations of Medieval French Romances written by the author considered to be the earliest female French poet.
Quemar's titles have been reviewed and featured in Academic journal and Mainstream Media, including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, across Fairfax Media, The Australian, and Australian Book Review, and on popular literary websites such as Compulsive Reader and Jonathan Shaw.
Quemar Press titles are stocked in bookstores across Australia including Readings, Gleebooks, Abbey's, Collected Works, Imprints Booksellers, MacLean's Booksellers, Better Read Than Dead and Andrews. Quemar also sells directly to the public, universities and libraries through our online store.

Business Model
Quemar Press' business model is structured around a key concept of not amassing any permanent overhead costs - a goal it has been achieving since its commencement. It sells titles directly to the public, directly to universities, directly to libraries, directly to bookstores and through consignment to bookstores. It utilises a combination of marketing and publicity strategies, including running the Quemar Press website as a platform for both direct sales and updated news and material, running social media campaigns, weekly electronic newsletters, promoting through literary festivals and author appearances.

Rights:
All Rights and Permissions queries can be sent to Quemar Press using the Contact Page.

Regarding Jennifer Maiden:
Following book management queries, Quemar feel we should clarify again the Rights situation between us and Giramondo Publishing. In mid- 2016, Giramondo stated that they had chosen not to publish Jennifer Maiden's new work further, and suggested that Quemar should publish it instead. Quemar was proud to do so, and published The Metronome in an online edition in November, 2016. Giramondo published The Metronome print version in March, 2017, and stated that Quemar would from then on be her publisher. Quemar felt that, if possible, Giramondo - being a much larger and more experienced publisher - should publish her, and were willing to defer to any choices about publishing arrangements made by Giramondo, including any wish of Giramondo  to be her exclusive publisher. If no further publication of any of her works by Giramondo was possible, Quemar was nevertheless thrilled to be her publisher. Giramondo retained management of The Metronome print edition until the end of December, 2017, and reaffirmed in July, 2017, that they wished Management of the book to be given to Quemar in January, 2018. From and including January, 2018, the print edition of The Metronome and all Maiden's earlier titles are sold by Quemar not Giramondo, and the print and electronic books are available from the Quemar website. Giramondo have returned all copyright on all her works to Jennifer Maiden.
Giramondo have confirmed that they have no future publishing interest in her work, and all her previous titles are available exclusively from Quemar and bookshops we supply. Quemar were delighted to be able to begin our publishing career with such a distinguished author, especially as she is the mother of the Managing Director and Founding Editor, Katharine Margot Toohey.

Regarding Vera Rudner:
Vera Rudner's paintings reproduced in Vera Rudner: A Study remain copyright of Vera Rudner, except for 'Kaleidoscopia' and 'Sacrilege', which are reproduced by permission of the National Gallery of Australia, and are copyright of  the Gallery.
